Cutting your Energy bills in Huntingdonshire
23 Jan 2012

In these times of financial cutbacks and escalating energy costs, it is a pleasant surprise to find that Huntingdonshire has kept its eye on the future.

Talking with Chris Jablonski of the Green House Project (http://www.greenhouseproject.co.uk/), I was reminded that they are opening the doors to visit the Green house in St Ives during the year (http://www.greenhouseproject.co.uk/the-houses/book-you-visit/) , to see how both residential and business properties can be made more energy efficient.

I’ve been watching this field with interest, ever since accompanying German companies specialising in green technologies to EcoBuild in 2011 and accompanying them on visits to retrofitting projects in London (Retrofitting existing homes in the UK - http://miltoncontact.blogspot.com/2011/03/retrofitting-existing-homes-in-uk.html).

One of the technologies that impressed me the most was the use of heat exchangers to pump heat into your house or business. Typically, for one unit of electrical energy, you get up to three units of heat for most of the year. With additional insulation, you can achieve – a dramatic saving of up to 70% or more on energy costs.

Currently, properties are able to have a free energy audit and a grant of up to £500 towards increasing their energy efficiency in Huntingdonshire and it is well worth taking up the offer. For a list of useful grants available see http://www.greenhouseproject.co.uk/sustainable-development/grants/

HBN will be visiting the Green House Project late this Spring if you would cannot make it beforehand and would like to join us then.
